Link: Hintergrund für eine ganze Zeile

Hallöle,

wie kann ich eine _ganze Zeile_ inkl. Leerzeichen als Link markieren?

habe Folgendes versucht:
a:hover, a:focus { background-color:#01826C; color:#fff; }

<a href='index.htm'><p class='ptre'>Willkommen<img src='img/icon_haken.gif' class='hide'></p></a>

Der Validator meldet:
Line 122, column 35: document type does not allow element "P" here; missing one of "APPLET", "OBJECT", "MAP", "IFRAME", "BUTTON" start-tag

Also kein <p> im <a>. Wenn ich's andersrum mache, wird nur das Wort, aber nicht die ganze Zeile markiert. Gibt's da einen Tipp?
